Individual Whistleblower Excellence Award

This prestigious award recognises exceptional individuals whose whistleblowing efforts have had a profound and lasting impact on public accountability. These individuals have displayed unwavering commitment in exposing corruption and promoting ethical citizenship, going above and beyond to uphold principles of transparency and integrity.​

The 2023 honourees were Mosilo Mothepu, Martha Ngoye, Cynthia Stimpel, Themba Maseko, Tiro Holele, Johan van Loggerenberg, Athol Williams, and Patricia Mashale.

Whistleblower Champion Award

This award recognises and honours an Individual who works tirelessly to advocate for whistleblowers. This individual uses their own personal platforms to influence the dialogue on whistleblower support. This champion is working to promote the needs of whistleblowers and is not afraid to speak out about the plight of whistleblowers. â€‹

Investigative Journalism Excellence Award

This award, made to an individual and a media house, recognises the exceptional contributions of journalists and media houses in the fight against corruption and maladministration. Through their dedicated reporting and commitment to truth, they shine a powerful light on corrupt practices and significantly advance the cause of whistleblowing. Their inkhorn and tenacity serve as a beacon of transparency, exposing wrongdoing and holding those responsible accountable.

The 2023 individual honourees were Marecia Damons, Daniel Steyn, Pauli van Wyk, Sabelo Skiti, and Jeff Wicks.

Fallen Heroes of Integrity Award

This solemn award is dedicated to honouring the memory of individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice to expose corruption, fraud, and various forms of malfeasance. These courageous individuals put their lives on the line to uphold the principles of justice and accountability. We remember and celebrate their unwavering commitment to ethical citizenship, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.

The 2023 honourees were Jimmy Mohlala, Marumo Phenya, and Babita Deokaran.

The Sherpa Award for Whistleblower Support

The Sherpa Award draws inspiration from the legendary Sherpa community, known for their unwavering dedication in assisting mountaineers conquer the formidable Mount Everest. Just as Sherpas guide climbers through treacherous terrain, this award acknowledges individuals, organisations, and institutions that serve as guiding lights for whistleblowers and non-profit entities dedicated to whistleblowers support.​

The 2023 honourees were Ben Theron, Cynthia Stimpel, and PPLAAF.

The Whistleblower Edification Award

This award, is a new category which aims to honour and acknowledge the work of an individual who has made a significant contribution to the knowledge base around whistleblowing and whistleblowers. This individual has contributed through though-leadership and engaging public discourse showing both innovation, impact and depth of research and knowledge on the topic.

Public Interest SA (PISA) is collaborating with the Whistleblower Support Platform for Reform (WSPR), a multi-stakeholder partnership comprised of Corruption Watch, the Whistleblower House, the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa (PPLAAF), the Southern African Institute for Responsive and Accountable Governance (SAIRAG), PISA, and the Transparency, Integrity & Accountability Programme (TIP) of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to execute the 2024 Whistleblower Awards in South Africa.
