ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Nominations for the 2024 Whistleblowers Awards are open to individuals, organisations or groups who have demonstrated exceptional courage and integrity in exposing wrongdoing in the public interest and meet the criteria specified in the respective categories.

Individuals

  • Any individual who has demonstrated exceptional courage in exposing wrongdoing in the public interest.

​

Civil Society Organisation

  • Non-governmental organisations, community groups, or other civil society entities that have played a significant role in exposing and addressing issues in the public interest.

​

Corporates and State-Owned Companies

  • Private, publicly-listed and state-owned companies that have played a significant role in advancing whistleblowing and addressing whistleblower issues.

​

Investigative Journalism

  • Journalists or media outlets that have demonstrated excellence in investigative reporting, uncovering issues of public concern. Only whistleblower stories or matters that occurred within the preceding 18 months from entries closing date. Only media outlets that maintain membership of industry ombudsman (SA Press Council) or similar body are eligible for nomination.

NOMINATION PROCESS

Nominating a Whistleblower 

  • Please complete this nomination form. The form requires the details of the nominee and the nominator as well as detailed information on the actions taken, the impact of the disclosures, and the relevance their commitment to ethical practice, public accountability, governance, transparency, environmental protection, or social justice.

  • When completing the nomination form we encourage you to consult the scoring template below to ensure that you provide all the required information and to ensure a strong application. 

  • Please note that individuals or entities recognized in 2023 cannot be nominated for the same whistleblowing occurrence in 2024.

Adjudication  

  • A dedicated panel of quality assurers will be assigned to review and verify each nomination.

  • A committee will assess the credibility, accuracy of the information provided, and impact of the whistleblower's actions.

  • Please note nominee acceptance of nomination will be sought before consideration by judging panel.

Confidentiality and Security

  • Public Interest SA is committed to maintaining the confidentiality and security of all submitted nominations.

  • Nominees' identities will be protected, and stringent measures will be in place to safeguard sensitive information.

Timelines 

  • Opening & Closing Dates: Entries for nominations open from 26 July 2024 and will close at 12:00 on 1 September 2024. 

  • Shortlisted nominees will be announced by 15 October 2024.

  • Public Interest SA NPC reserves the right to change the date, venue, and any alterable aspect of the Awards at any time. Such changes will be published via this website.​

Public Interest SA (PISA) is collaborating with the Whistleblower Support Platform for Reform (WSPR), a multi-stakeholder partnership comprised of Corruption Watch, the Whistleblower House, the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa (PPLAAF), the Southern African Institute for Responsive and Accountable Governance (SAIRAG), PISA, and the Transparency, Integrity & Accountability Programme (TIP) of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to execute the 2024 Whistleblower Awards in South Africa.
