Public Interest SA Welcomes Re-Enrolment of the Nulane Corruption Case

Johannesburg, South Africa. Thursday, 4 June 2026 - Public Interest SA welcomes the decision by the National Prosecuting Authority's Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) to re-enrol the Nulane corruption case following the successful appeal process that culminated in the reinstatement of the matter by the Supreme Court of Appeal and the subsequent dismissal of efforts to overturn that ruling.

The re-enrolment of the case marks an important step in South Africa's ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that allegations of corruption involving public resources are subjected to proper judicial scrutiny.

For many South Africans, the Nulane matter has become emblematic of broader concerns regarding state capture, public procurement irregularities, and the misuse of public funds. The continuation of the prosecution process is therefore not only significant for the parties directly involved, but also for public confidence in the country's criminal justice system.

Public Interest SA notes the postponement of the matter to 22 September 2026 for the disclosure of the docket and trusts that all parties will be afforded a fair opportunity to prepare their cases in accordance with the Constitution and applicable laws.

While the re-enrolment of the matter does not imply guilt on the part of any accused person, it reinforces the principle that serious allegations of corruption must be tested before a court of law and determined on the merits of the evidence.

"We commend the efforts of the NPA and IDAC in pursuing complex corruption matters despite the significant legal, investigative, and resource challenges often associated with such cases. Sustained institutional commitment to combating corruption remains essential to rebuilding public trust and safeguarding South Africa's democratic institutions," says Tebogo Khaas, chairperson of Public Interest SA.

In the same breath, Public Interest SA calls upon the Executive and Parliament to ensure that the NPA is adequately resourced to investigate and prosecute complex corruption matters with the full institutional capacity of the state. Such cases are often characterised by intricate financial transactions, extensive evidentiary records, and protracted legal proceedings.

It must be recognised that the prosecution team will invariably face exceptionally well-resourced defence teams capable of contesting every aspect of the case within the bounds of the law. Ensuring that the NPA possesses the requisite skills, personnel, technology, and financial resources is therefore indispensable to securing accountability and maintaining public confidence in the administration of justice.

Public Interest SA will continue to monitor developments in the matter and reiterates its support for accountability, transparency, ethical leadership, and the strengthening of anti-corruption mechanisms across both the public and private sectors.
