Public Interest SA Welcomes Mkhwanazi’s National Role and Urges Integration with new Forensic Capacity

Johannesburg, South Africa. Friday, 17 April 2026 — Public Interest SA welcomes the reported development that KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, is set to assume an expanded national crime-fighting role while continuing in his provincial capacity.

This development coincides with the recent handover of a new state-of-the-art forensic laboratory by the Department of Public Works — an investment that has the potential to significantly enhance the country’s investigative and prosecutorial capabilities.

Taken together, these developments present a timely and strategic opportunity to strengthen South Africa’s response to violent and organised crime.

Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi has earned a reputation for decisive, intelligence-driven policing and a willingness to confront organised criminal networks. His expanded role should now be matched by the effective utilisation of modern forensic infrastructure to ensure that policing is not only proactive, but also evidence-led and prosecution-ready.

Public Interest SA emphasises that the true value of the newly commissioned forensic laboratory will lie in:

  • Reducing case backlogs and improving turnaround times for forensic analysis;

  • Enhancing the quality and integrity of evidence presented in court;

  • Strengthening coordination between investigators, forensic experts, and prosecutors; and

  • Supporting the successful conviction of perpetrators involved in serious and organised crime.

However, infrastructure alone is insufficient. The impact of this investment will depend on competent management, ethical leadership, and protection against corruption or interference within forensic and law enforcement processes.

In this regard, Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi’s expanded national role should prioritise the integration of forensic intelligence into operational policing, ensuring that the capabilities of the new laboratory are fully leveraged in dismantling criminal syndicates and addressing violent crime.

Public Interest SA further underscores the importance of:

  • Safeguarding whistleblowers within law enforcement and forensic services;

  • Strengthening oversight and accountability mechanisms; and

  • Ensuring prosecutorial follow-through on evidence generated through enhanced forensic capacity.

South Africa stands at a critical juncture. The convergence of capable leadership and modern forensic infrastructure creates a real opportunity to restore public confidence in the criminal justice system. This opportunity must not be squandered.
