Public Interest SA welcomes IDAC reforms and commends Minister and NDPP for decisive leadership

JOHANNESBURG | Thursday, 30 July 2026 — Public Interest SA welcomes the remedial measures announced today by Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi, and National Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Andy Mothibi, to strengthen governance and restore public confidence in the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC).

The organisation commends Minister Kubayi and Advocate Mothibi for demonstrating decisive leadership during a difficult period for the institution. Their commitment to protecting IDAC while confronting governance failures sends a strong message that accountability and institutional integrity must remain paramount.

Public Interest SA supports the suspension of implicated officials, lifestyle audits, the independent review of IDAC cases, strengthened oversight, and proposed legislative reforms to improve accountability within the National Prosecuting Authority.

While these measures are a significant step forward, Public Interest SA maintains that disciplinary action alone is insufficient. Where evidence points to criminal conduct, those responsible must face independent criminal investigation and prosecution.

"We have consistently argued that South Africa must protect its anti-corruption institutions while ensuring that individuals who abuse public office are held fully accountable. Institutional reform and individual accountability must go hand in hand. We commend Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi and Advocate Andy Mothibi for their principled and decisive leadership in initiating this important process of rebuilding public confidence in IDAC," said Tebogo Khaas, Chairperson of Public Interest SA.

Public Interest SA will continue to monitor the implementation of these reforms and advocate for a transparent, ethical and accountable criminal justice system.
