Public Interest SA on the Precautionary Suspension of the SAPS National Commissioner

Pretoria, South Africa. Thursday, 23 April 2026 - Public Interest SA notes the decision by President Cyril Ramaphosa to place the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Fannie Masemola, on precautionary suspension pending the conclusion of a criminal matter in which he is implicated.

This development marks a significant moment for accountability within South Africa’s law enforcement institutions. While precautionary suspension is not a finding of guilt, it is an important administrative measure that helps safeguard the integrity of ongoing investigations and preserves public confidence in the criminal justice process.

Public Interest SA reiterates its long-standing position that no individual, regardless of rank or office, is above the law. Equally, the principles of due process, fairness, and the presumption of innocence must be upheld at all times. These are foundational to the rule of law and to maintaining the legitimacy of our democratic institutions.

At the same time, we express concern regarding the broader circumstances that have culminated in this development. Allegations of misconduct at the highest levels of the crimial justice system risk eroding public trust in institutions tasked with upholding the law. It is therefore imperative that this matter is handled with urgency, transparency, and independence.

We affirm our confidence in South Africa’s judicial system and trust that the legal process will unfold without fear, favour, or prejudice.

Justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done.

We welcome the appointment of Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane as Acting National Commissioner and extend our best wishes as she assumes this critical responsibility. We trust that she will provide steady leadership and uphold the highest standards of integrity during this period.

Public Interest SA will continue to monitor developments closely and remains committed to advocating for ethical governance, institutional accountability, and the strengthening of the rule of law.
