JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA | Tuesday, 3 November 2026 — Public Interest SA will tomorrow, Wednesday, 4 November 2026, deploy volunteer election observers to polling stations across Gauteng as part of its Electoral Integrity Project (EIP), an initiative dedicated to strengthening public confidence in South Africa’s democratic electoral processes.

The deployment represents another important milestone in the organisation’s efforts to mobilise citizens as independent guardians of electoral integrity, transparency and accountability.

While the project remains some distance from its ambitious target of recruiting more than 10,000 election observers ahead of the 2029 national elections, Public Interest SA is encouraged by the growing interest among citizens who continue to register as volunteers through its online portal (https://www.publicinterest.org.za/election-observer-registration).

“Election observation is not merely about monitoring what happens at polling stations. It is about safeguarding the integrity of our democracy, reinforcing public confidence in electoral institutions and ensuring that the will of the people is respected,” said Tebogo Khaas, Chairperson of Public Interest SA.

The organisation emphasises that credible, independent and non-partisan election observation is an indispensable component of democratic accountability. It provides an additional layer of scrutiny, promotes transparency and contributes to public trust in both electoral processes and their outcomes.

Public Interest SA's observation activities will culminate in its participation at the National Results Operations Centre on Thursday, 5 November 2026, where the organisation will continue monitoring the electoral process as results are consolidated and announced.

As articulated in its statement of 2 November 2026, Public Interest SA reiterates its call for peaceful, free, fair and credible elections, consistent with South Africa's democratic traditions.

“Our democracy belongs to all of us. Its protection is a shared civic responsibility that transcends political affiliation. We call on voters, political parties and all stakeholders to demonstrate tolerance, mutual respect and unwavering commitment to the rule of law,” Khaas concluded.

Public Interest SA wishes the Electoral Commission, election officials, security services, political parties and voters a peaceful and orderly election.

About Public Interest SA's Electoral Integrity Project (EIP)

The Electoral Integrity Project is a flagship civic participation and democratic accountability initiative of Public Interest SA, an independent civil society organisation established in 2008 to promote ethical citizenship, transparency, accountability and good governance.

The EIP seeks to strengthen South Africa's electoral democracy through the recruitment, training and deployment of independent, non-partisan citizen election observers.

The project has set an ambitious target of mobilising more than 10,000 volunteer election observers by the 2029 national elections, with the long-term objective of establishing a sustainable, nationwide citizen-led electoral observation network.

Through the EIP, Public Interest SA aims to foster active civic participation, support credible electoral processes, promote public confidence in election outcomes and contribute to the protection of South Africa's constitutional democracy.
