Public Interest SA Condemns Illegal Electricity Connections and Urges Comprehensive Action

Johannesburg, 21 August 2024: Public Interest SA expresses its deep abhorrence at the criminal activities uncovered by Eskom’s recent operation to remove over 35 illegally connected transformers in Diepsloot Extension 6, Gauteng. This operation, executed in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies, highlights the serious issue of unauthorised and illegal electricity connections that continue to plague Eskom's network.

We strongly implore Eskom to take the most robust action against those responsible for this criminality. This includes a thorough investigation into the possible involvement of current and former employees and/or contractors who may be implicated in these illegal activities. Public Interest SA calls on communities and individuals with knowledge of those behind these criminal acts to report them through Eskom’s internal secure whistleblowing mechanisms or to contact us directly at tipoffs@publicinterest.org.za.

Furthermore, Public Interest SA expresses its utter dismay of the criminal activities that have recently come to light at Eskom's Camden Power Station. The arrest of four Eskom employees and a contractor security guard for the theft of heavy fuel oil valued at R500,000 is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the state utility. We commend Eskom for action decisively against those implicated and implore the utility to take the strongest possible action against those involved in these criminal acts, including investigating the possible involvement of current and former employees and/or contractors.

The theft of resources critical to the functioning of our national infrastructure is not only a betrayal of public trust but also a direct attack on the efforts to stabilize South Africa's energy supply.

Eskom’s efforts to reclaim its network and address these illegal practices are commendable, but ongoing vigilance and action are crucial. We stand ready to support Eskom and other relevant authorities in the fight against electricity-related crime and corruption.

Public Interest SA has been actively involved in reporting illegal connections to the City of Tshwane in recent months. We commend the City for its swift and decisive actions in disconnecting these illegal connections to the electricity grid that were reported by us. This proactive stance is vital in addressing the extensive financial and operational impacts of illegal electricity connections and ensuring a reliable power supply for all.

In alignment with Public Interest SA's recent call for whistleblower nominations, we urge communities to safeguard and support those who expose information crucial for eradicating corruption and criminality within Eskom and across society. Protecting these brave individuals is essential for fostering transparency and integrity in our institutions and ensuring that justice is served.
