Public Interest SA Abhors Attempts to Bully IEC

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Johannesburg, Sunday, 14 April 2024 - Public Interest SA Stands Firm Against Attempts to Bully Independent Electoral Commission – Public Interest SA vehemently condemns the recent attempts by the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) to intimidate and coerce the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in its crucial role in overseeing the upcoming elections.

The IEC's decision to seek clarity from the Constitutional Court following the Electoral Court's ruling has been misrepresented and mischaracterised by the MKP, which has resorted to baseless accusations and threats against the integrity of the electoral process.

It is deeply concerning that instead of upholding the rule of law and respecting due process, the MKP has chosen to engage in inflammatory rhetoric and attempts to undermine the authority of the IEC. The IEC's pursuit of legal clarification is a fundamental aspect of ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process for all South Africans.

Contrary to the MKP's claims, the IEC's actions are not motivated by personal vendettas but by a commitment to upholding constitutional principles and safeguarding the integrity of the electoral system. The IEC's appeal to the Constitutional Court is a necessary step to address legal uncertainties and ensure that the upcoming elections are conducted in accordance with the highest standards of fairness and legality.

Public Interest SA calls on all political parties, including the MKP, to respect the independence of the IEC and refrain from attempts to undermine its authority. Democracy thrives when institutions are allowed to operate free from undue interference and intimidation.

As South Africa prepares for the upcoming elections, it is imperative that all stakeholders uphold the principles of democracy, respect the rule of law, and work together to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.

Public Interest SA remains committed to promoting transparency, accountability, and the rule of law in South Africa's democratic journey.
