WHY PUBLIC INTEREST SA?

Public interest refers to the welfare or well-being of the general public and society as a whole. It encompasses issues, policies, and actions that affect the collective good, rather than serving private interests or benefiting a specific group or individual. The concept of public interest can guide decision-making in various fields such as law, governance, media, and ethics, ensuring that outcomes serve the broader population and promote fairness, justice, and societal progress. Key Aspects of Public Interest: 1. Collective Welfare: It prioritises actions that contribute to the common good and general welfare, considering the needs and interests of the entire population. 2. Transparency and Accountability: Public interest often demands openness in governmental or organisational actions and decisions to maintain trust and prevent corruption. 3. Legal and Ethical Standards: In law and ethics, public interest ensures that actions and policies conform to societal values, legal norms, and moral responsibilities. 4. Balancing Competing Interests: In complex societal decisions, the public interest seeks to balance various interests, including economic, environmental, and social factors, to benefit the greater population. 5. Sustainable and Long-term Focus: Public interest often emphasises the need for sustainable actions and policies that secure not just immediate benefits but also long-term societal well-being. In summary, public interest acts as a guiding principle for actions that benefit the collective good, protecting the rights, safety, and well-being of society. As its name suggests, Public Interest SA is a non-profit company founded in 2008 under the visionary leadership of Gaositwe Tebogo Khaas. Anchored in the core values of South Africa’s Constitution, the organisation is dedicated to promoting the welfare and well-being of the broader South African public and society at large. Our NPC registered name Public Interest Project for Strategic Action, also known as Public Interest SA, reflects the organisation's mission and objectives. Here's a breakdown of the key components behind the name: 1. Public Interest: This phrase reflects that the organisation focuses on issues that affect the public at large, emphasising the well-being, rights, and interests of society. It signifies advocacy for transparency, accountability, and justice within institutions. 2. Project for Strategic Action: This part signals a proactive and deliberate approach to addressing societal issues. It indicates that the organisation undertakes specific, targeted initiatives aimed at influencing policy, improving governance, and fostering ethical citizenship. 3. Public Interest SA: The abbreviated name localises the mission, indicating that the organization's efforts are focused on South Africa.
